Abstract
MacNeish, in partnership with the Andover Foundation for Archaeological Research, has been investigating the origins of agriculture and settled life. To answer some of this question this document uses data from archaeological sites in southern New Mexico, mostly the Jornada region. The various sites and their excavation procedures are described. Their artifacts are described, typed, and compared to similar artifacts from southern California, Arizona, southern Colorado, southern Utah, western Texas, and northern Mexico. The artifacts are used to create a relative chronology. And the artifacts along with absolute dates allow MacNeish to date the Gardener Springs, Keystone, Fresnal, and Hueco phases of the Archaic. Cultural summaries of these phases are presented along with trends in settlement patterns, tools used, seasonality, and subsistence including horticulture or agriculture.
