Abstract
The Square Hearth site has three periods of use. The Late Archaic/Early Agricultural period is indicated by a San Pedro-type projectile point. The radiocarbon dates and the diagnostic ceramics indicate an Agua Caliente phase and a late Colonial/early Sedentary Hohokam occupation as well. Data ascribed to the Hohokam were not marked for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes. The main use of the site falls within the Agua Caliente phase. The site has rectangular and circular pit structures, square hearths with and without ventilator features, trash deposits, mortuary features, a few roasting pits, but few storage pits when compared to the other sites excavated during the mitigation portion of the Interstate 10 Corridor Improvement Project.
