Abstract
The distribution of settlements in Tonto Basin was the product of an unusually complicated combination of cultural, historical and environmental factors which are discussed at great length in this study.By the Classic period, populations in Tonto Basin were using two different settlement strategies. One settlement strategy made use of centers with public architecture and was associated with developments in the Hohokam areas to the south and west. The second pattern was associated with populations living in the mountains surrounding Tonto Basin, and was one in which small sites clustered around large, primary villages. The distribution of 'sites' in Tonto Basin is thus a composite of two distinct archaeological settlement patterns and, in some parts of the basin, the patterns overlap considerably. Further complicating the matter, both settlement strategies employed a unit of organization that lay above the scale of the individual settlement and below that of the local region, units referred to as settlement complexes that had different properties in each system (p. 55).
