An evaluation of subsistence and specialization at the Marana sites

studies in the hohokam community of marana (15) • Published In 1987 • Pages: 235-248

By: Fish, Suzanne K..

Abstract
Fish discusses the types of settlements and land use found within the four zones withing the Marana community. The Marana community is comprised of more than 320 sites and covers an area of about 50 square kilometers. She concentrates on summarizing the data and comparing the sites of Rancho Derrio (AZ AA:12:3), Rancho Bajo(AZ AA:12:1), and Muchas Casas (AZ AA 12:2). Although all three of these sites fall within a single zone there is evidence for agricultural specialization at each site, in particular with the production of agave at Rancho Derrio and the exploitation of cholla and saguaro at Muchas Casas.
