Abstract
Roney summarizes settlement patterns, room counts, and ceramic types for the eastern San Juan Basin and the Acoma-Laguna area for the Pueblo II to Pueblo III periods. He relies on survey data to compile the information. He includes brief descriptions of Chaco Canyon as well. In his description of settlements he frequently includes mention of the size of the discrete communities, which will include more than just one large pueblo, and describes the public architecture and regional organization. Roney states 'During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries the Puebloan occupants of the San Juan Basin and Acoma-Laguna areas apparently used at least three levels of integration. The most basic was the family level, indicated by the reliance on small 'unit pueblos.' ... Where reasonably complete inventory data are available, it is clear that small residential units do not usually occur in isolation. Pueblo II unit pueblos are commonly found in discrete clusters, rather than being mapped onto the landscape in direct relation to key resources such as surface water or arable land. ... During Pueblo III times ... discrete communities may include anywhere from 85 to almost 1,000 rooms contained in clusters of between 10 and 80 individual buildings. From this perspective the transition from more dispersed unit pueblos to large, aggregated pueblos may not have been as dramatic as is often assumed.' (page 163).
