Early state expansion in Central Mexico: Teotihuacan in Morelos

By: Hirth, Kenn, Angulo V., Jorge..

Abstract
Hirth and Villaseñor present evidence of different kinds of Teotihuacan influence in Morelos. In the Amatzinac region it appears the Teotihuacan state colonized the area as evidenced by the influx of Teotihuacan-style ceramics, the change in settlement patterns, agricultural intensification, and Teotihuacan offerings in burial assemblages. This area is along a natural trade corridor. In Coatlan there are fewer Teotihuacan-style ceramics, what does appear came later, and changes in settlement patterns suggest Teotihuacan deliberately decentralized the population to reduce the level of social complexity in that region.
