Abstract
The specific objective of this study is to consider evolutionary processes in a small community (Santo Domingo Tomaltepec) during the early phases of the Formative period in Mesoamerican cultural development. Archaeological analyis in this study focuses on the community composition of Santo Domingo Tomaltepec including the nature and patterning of the physical components of the community, status differentiation within the community, subsistence activities, and craft and exchange activities. Only data relevant to the Early and Middle Formative periods at Tomaltepec which fall within the Highland Mesoamerican Early Preclassic time frame have been indexed with OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes; information on the Late Formative period along with Monte Albán Ia, Ic, and II which fall outside this time frame have been excluded from this analysis.
