By: Clark, John E..
Abstract
This paper traces the origins of Mesoamerican culture to the Pacific coast of Chiapas, Mexico. Clark examines radiocarbon dates of the coastal sequence, the region's productivity, and evidence for ranked societies. He concludes that a chiefdom society was in place by 1650 B.C. He also examines the spread of this period's Locona and Locona-like ceramics across southeastern Mesoamerica.
