Abstract
This is an introductory chapter in a book of reports on the preliminary investigation of the El Mirador site. (Other chapters from the book included in this eHRAF collection are documents nos. 25-27.) Matheny et al. identify three prinicipal groups of structures at El Mirador: i) the western building complex, which includes the 55-meter-high El Tigre pyramid; ii) the eastern complex, which includes the 42-meter-high step pyramid, Danta, and iii) the huge platform base and temples(?) known as Tres Marías, or Tres micos. The authors also describe the site's ceramics and architecture as revealed from the examination of looter's excavations in Plaza Units 1 and 2. Two-thirds of the sherds collected were identified as Late Preclassic Chicanel, more specifically Sierra Red and Polvera Black. Matheny et al. also discuss field work conditions and logistics, and future research plans.
