Abstract
This is a study of the archaeological site of Seibal, a major Mayan ruin in the southern Maya lowlands of Guatemala. The work is divided into three major parts. Part I is an introduction to and a recapitulation of the archaeological research at the site carried out by Willey and his associates. This section provides a general background on Seibal including information on its geography, previous archaeological research, problems associated with the site, a synopsis of the culture sequences, and a summary of the 1964-1968 field investigations at Seibal. Parts II and III provide a narrative reconstruction, phase by phase, of the culture history of the site and a reconsideration of the problems with which the author et al. began their investigation at Seibal, including a consideration of what appears to be some of the cultural processes involved in Seibal's history (p. 181).
