Archaeology and prehistory
friendly islands: a history of tonga • Melbourne • Published In 1977 • Pages: 4-26
By: Poulsen, Jens.
Abstract
Poulsen writes an overview of Tongan prehistory. He describes the environment and natural resources; the earliest settlement of the islands (the Lapita Period was not indexed for Outline of Cultural Materials subjects); the types of monuments found, the distribution of shell middens and what can be found in them; the use of pottery, although most archaeologists would now say that Poulsen is incorrect about how long decorated pots were used; other types of tools and artifacts; diet; and Tongan connections with other island groups such as Samoa or Fiji.
