By: McKern, W. C. (Will Carleton).

Abstract
McKern was the first to do archaeology in Tonga. He conducted excavations and surveys on several of the larger islands, but especially on Tongatabu. The majority of the document describes his excavations and findings at various mounds, platforms, stone quarries, mounuments, langis, and forts. He dates these structures to between the 11th century and the 16th century BP He also describes Lapaha, the capital of Tonga during the height of its hegemony. Excavations of several middens and caves also occurred and McKern briefly describes the pottery he found.
