Abstract
This author was leader of the Ethnological Division of the Kamchatka expedition made in 1910-11 'at the expense of F.P. Riaboushinsky, Moscow banker, and under the auspices of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.' The book is primarily a report on Jochelson's archaeological diggings in Kamchatka. Such ethnological information as Jochelson includes is quite good, though he relies heavily on Krasheninnikov and Steller for details on the Kamchadal before their Russianization. For the archaeology, Jochelson first describes other paleolithic and neolithic sites and findings in Siberia. In Kamchatka the archaeological material appears to be neolithic, but Jochelson was unable to date it. He describes his excavations, sites, and findings from Kamchatka with much of the material from around Avacha Bay. Many of the sites have ceramics with ears (or small loops or handles)on the inside rim for suspending the pot above the fire, a distinct difference from the sites to the north in the Kamchatka river valley. Although most of the material appears to date to the neolithic, the neolithic period extends into the 1600s when Russian explorers first arrived in Kamchatka. So, it is quite possible that data that is outside the time period of the Tarya Neolithic was indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects.
