Abstract
This is a report of a settlement survey and excavations carried out in the Huamachuco region in La Libertad Department and the Cajabamba region in Cajamarca Department of Peru. McCown also examines the Uhle collection of artifacts assembled from an earlier excavation of Huamachuco. The major site examined is the city-fortress of Marca Huamachuco. McCown distinguishes two periods of occupation (Middle and Late Huamachuco periods) based on differences in wall construction, building dimensions, and ceramic assemblages. According to McCown the inferior wall construction and ceramics of the Late period as compared to the Middle period suggest a disintegration of the earlier tradition. The text includes 23 photographic plates of sites and ceramics.
