Architectural evidence for the development of nonegalitarian social systems in coastal Peru

By: Feldman, Robert A..

Abstract
Feldman presents architectural evidence for social stratification during the Preceramic at the site of Aspero, mainly describing the temple mound of Huaca do los Idolos during the Late Preceramic (4750-4400 BP, or 2750-2400 BC). The mounds at Aspero were not domestic structures and would have been built with corporate labor, indicating a chiefdom level society. There is also a comparison of coastal religious architecture with highland temple structures. The similarities between these two areas are evidence of extensive contacts and trade.
