Abstract
This is a preliminary synthesis of field work at Chavín de Huántar undertaken between 1966-1972 by Lumbreras, written as a precursor to his major study of this site appearing in the eHRAF collection as document no. 6: Lumbreras. The author reviews the works of previous archaeologists who have excavated at the site, and then turns his attention to a study of the architecture of the Old Temple at Chavín, and the finds of ceramics, stone carvings, and human and animal bones found in several of the galleries or tunnels of that temple. The author theorizes that the condition of many of the fragments of human bones found in the temple may suggest the presence of cannibalism at the site.
