Abstract
Izumi organized the University of Tokyo Scientific Expedition to the Andes to carry out large-scale excavations at the site of Kotosh. This article summarizes his findings from that site. The article covers the time periods and cultures of Higueras, Sajara-Patac, Chavín, Kotosh, Waira-jirca, and Mito. Only the Chavín and Kotosh periods were indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects. Izumi also discusses Kotosh in the context of the surrounding sites in the upper Huallage valley. The research and writting for this article were done before many radiocarbon dates were available for Chavín, so arranging the various periods in chronological order is one of the main concerns of Izumi's article.
