Abstract
The author provides solid overview of Moche culture, with particular emphasis on the Northern Moche from the point of view of Lambayeque Valley site of Pampa Grande, which was the dominant Northern Moche urban center late in the tradition, with comparisons drawn to the contemporary Southern Moche center of Galindo in the Moche Valley. In addition to using data from others' field work, the author conducted survey, mapped parts of the site, and excavated small portions of Pampa Grande during the 1970s. The rise and fall of Pampa Grande are interpreted as a creative response to prolonged climatic anomalies, the encroaching Cajamarca and Huari cultures, and the political and social instability of an urban population, with the synthesis covering the settlement pattern of the city and the artifacts found, what the settlement pattern can tell us about the system of government, and the economy of Pampa Grande and the Moche in general.
