Abstract
This dissertation presents an analysis of changes through time in the urban landscape of Chan Chan, with particular emphasis on the elite administrative structures known as ciudadelas, although small irregular agglutinated rooms (SIAR) and intermediate architecture are also described. A seriation of adobe bricks provides a chronology, checked against the architectural morphology of the audiencias which was standardized over time. The results are used to shed light on state economy, imperial and military expansion, extraction of tribute, and irrigation systems in rural areas. The growth of the city is divided into seven phases: Formative, Imperial Phase 1, Consolidation, Imperial Phase 2, Imperial Phase 3, Chimu-Inca, and Colonial. Topics covered for each include the architecture added, urban-rural interaction, and the ties between the capital and state-designed settlements in other valleys, with ethnohistorical inferences.
