By: Mills, Nigel.

Abstract
This document contains an introduction to the Early Neolithic in southern France. Mills names Impressed Ware sites and briefly describes the ceramics, stone and bone technology, settlement patterns, and the economy (hunting, herding, gathering, and some cultivation). Other Neolithic societies for the area are also briefly described. Mills mostly describes the geology, soils, climate, soil formation, agricultural potential of various soils, and the vegetation in Provence and Languedoc to help the reader understand the "man-land relationsips" and to get a better idea of where one should expect to find sites at various time periods during the Neolithic.
