The Early Woodland period in Iowa

By: Tiffany, Joseph A..

Abstract
Tiffany lists some Early Woodland sites commonly described for Iowa; all are multicomponent sites. The Ryan focus is described. It's traits are based on artifacts found in burial sites. Iowan ceramics and projectile points are covered. A recent find of a Middle Woodland cemetery is important in that it shows a continuation of burial practices from the Late Archaic. It also shows 'Early Woodland period societies show an admixture of Late Archaic and Woodland stage cultural traits.… [and that the introduction of ceramics] may be time transgressive and of little importance culturally.' (page 168).
