guilá naquitz : archaic foraging and early agriculture in oaxaca, mexicoOrlando • Published In 1986 • Pages:

By: Flannery, Kent V..

Abstract
In this third ”introductory“ chapter, Flannery focuses in on the hard data used to model subsistence strategies, starting with an overview of the topography, geology, flora, and climate of the Oaxaca Valley, concentrating on the eastern portion of the Tlacolula subvalley where Guilá Naquitz Cave is situated. The archaeological survey of the area is recounted, followed by a summary of the evidence for Early Archaic social organization, seasonal settlement patterns, and subsistence strategies. Considerable comparative data from the Tehuacán Valley and the Late Archaic in general are employed in this exercise. (A good deal of comparative evidence not taken directly from the archaeological record for the Early Archaic is indexed for COMPARATIVE EVIDENCE [171].)
