Abstract
The authors describe how village life changed over the four thousand years of the Peiligang and Yangshao phases. Concentrating on the Yangshao phase, they examine political, economic and social changes by describing changes in village organization, house form, settlement hierarchy, burial practices, population, households, and social hierarchy, including gender differences.
