Chang presents a survey of Chinese archaeology, describing the various prehistoric cultures in China south of the Yellow River. In the site descriptions he covers ceramics, tools, economic activities, and burials. He also describes the prehistoric climates and environments. Chang discusses some of the history of how the sites were discovered and previous archaeological work.
