The autonomy of the south-east European Copper Age

Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society for 1969, new ser35 • Published In 1969 • Pages: 12-47

By: Renfrew, Colin.

Abstract
Renfrew argues that the Chalcolithic in the Balkans developed independently of other copper and bronze age cultures in the Aegean or the Near East. When Renfrew wrote this article this was not a widely held belief. In discussing these independent origins, Renfrew summarizes some of the cultures and the changes that occurred in their technologies (such as changes in ceramic designs and shapes) from the late Neolithic into the Bronze Age to demonstrate these developments as autochthonic. Renfrew also discusses copper metallurgy. Only the data relating to the Chalcolithic Period was indexed for Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) codes.
