The west Pontic 'maritime interaction sphere': a long-term structure in Balkan prehistory?

Oxford journal of archaeology12 (2) • Published In 1993 • Pages: 175-196

By: Price, R. P. S..

Abstract
Price examines the interactions between inland and coastal sites from the Mesolithic through the begining of the Early Bronze Age. Price sees many of the differences as due to ritual activities which arose during the Mesolithic and which would have had implications for social organization. Some of the differences are seen in house forms, longevity of settlements, pottery decorations, extended burials and including figurines in burials along the coast, verses inland cult structures that are separate from the cemeteries. Price sees Varna as, '…as a new elaboration of longstanding burial practices.' (page 192).
