Chronology of prehistoric cultures in Bulgaria

prehistoric bulgaria (22) • Published In 1995 • Pages: 149-191

By: Boyadziev, Yavor D..

Abstract
Boyadziev examines the dates for many Bulgarian sites and cultures from the Neolithic through the Bronze Age to try to synchronize these dates with adjacent cultures. He examines the dates from various cultures and sites and discusses what was dated and how it was dated. This is important because not all dates are accurate. Archaeologists depend on radiocarbon dates to date sites but there have been changes in the concentrations of atmospheric C-14 throughout time. This can make radiocarbon dates for sites too early or too late. Boyadziev discusses these discrepancies to try to establish a corrected chronology for Bulgarian prehistory. As Boyadziev points out the ultimate solution will require interdisciplinary study. A catalog of C-14 dates for Bulgarian sites is presented at the end of the article.
