Abstract
Ellis discusses the increase in population and the increase in settlement size for the Chalcolithic Period in the Cucuteni-Tripolye culture area. These increases created a 'need for a stable and reliable food supply and long-term food storage,' (page 176-177). Archaeologically we can see the response to the food storage problem in the changes in ceramic manufacturing (such as large ceramic storage vessels) and ceramic innovations (such as up-draught kilns). Another change is seen with the creation of ceramic manufaturing workshops and ceramic manufacturing areas within settlements.
