The archaeological fieldwork, the features, and the finds

Gårdlösa : an iron age community in its natural and social setting, , [edited] by Berta StjernquistII • Published In 1993 • Pages: 171

Abstract
This document presents an in-depth study of the archaeological excavations at the Iron Age community of Gårdlösa located in southeastern Sweden, undertaken between the years of 1960 to 1976. The author describes all the archaeological remains from the site with particular emphasis on the analysis of data obtained from the study of house foundations, occupation layers outside the house foundation, pits and hearths, and graves. The constructions and finds are illustrated in 11 figures in the text and 101 end plates. Tables and maps as well as a separate 'key' map show the location of the features excavated at the site. Although Stjernquist believes that the settlement of Gårdlösa existed from the first century B.C. to the eleventh century A.D. (p.8), only information relevant to the time sequence of the Scandinavian Iron Age of approximately 500 B.C. to ca. 500-700 A.D., has been indexed for Outline of Cultural Materials (OCM) codes. This would also apply to earlier Bronze Age material discussed briefly in the text (pre-500 B.C.).
