Iron Age Gao
Journal of African history • 38 • Published In 1997 • Pages: 1-30
By: Insoll, Timothy.
Abstract
Based on Insoll's field work in the Gao region of Mali in 1993, this article attempts to reconstruct the origins and development of the area using archaeological evidence rather than historical sources in Arabic or locally written chronicles which provide detailed but often contradictory descriptions of Gao (p. 4). The author describes several archaeological sites in the region which fall within the Iron Age focus of this file (i.e., 2500 B.P.-1200 B.P.), these being Koima, Gadei, and the very earliest period of Gao Ancien. Data dealing with the trans-Saharan trade and medieval Gao, which lie outside the time focus of this file, have not been indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes.
