The archaeology of Benin: excavations and other researches in and around Benin City, Nigeria

Clarendon PressOxford • Published In 1975 • Pages:

Abstract
Excavations in and around Benin City provided radiocarbon dates from stratified deposits, allowing the creation of a preliminary sequence of pottery forms and decorations: the early, middle and late phases (the early phase is within the West African Regional Development Tradition). The project included mapping the system of earthen walls and ditches in the city and the surrounding countryside, with excavation of several parts. Of particular interest are two cases of sickle cell anemia (among the earliest known at the time) and the early artistic use of copper or copper alloys.
