Iron Age Gao: an archaeological contribution
Journal of African history • 38 (1) • Published In 1997 • Pages: 1-30
By: Insoll, Timothy.
Abstract
Surveys and excavations in the Gao region had the goal of finding evidence for the acceptance of Islam and for trans-Saharan and inter-regional trade. Not a site report, this work details the first field season's evidence for occupation in the region, settlement patterns, and the origins and development of the major sites (Gao Ancien and Gao–Saney), as well as for trade and the economy.
