Abstract
To offer an explanation of the phenomonon known as the Natufian, as archaeological data 'never has an uniquivocal meaning, and … depends upon a series of interpretations;' Francois Valla states 'it is necessary to observe it, take measure of its complexity, and to describe it appropriately.' (page 169). To that end he summarizes the material industries (lithic, bone);architecture; food (procurement, storage, diet); burial data; art and decoration; physical appearance and health; differences between the early, late, and final Natufian phases; how sedentary they may have been; the site of Mallaha; and domestication of the dog.
