The beginning of the Neolithic: searching for meaning in material culture change

Paléorient18Published In 1992 • Pages: 63-75

By: Watkins, Trevor.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Houses at the site of Qermez Dere were unusual in that they had symbolic or religious features of plastered clay pillars, were kept very clean, and food preparation activities appear to have occurred outside the houses in another part of the site. Projectile points appear at the site along with maceheads, both probably used for warfare. Watkins sees the beginnings of the concepts of the 'home, ' territoriality, and property in this data. The essay explores the changes that occurred at the beginning of the neolithic period and how sedentary hunter-gatherers handle resource stress.
