The seals and sealings

tell sabi abyad, the late neolithic settlement : report on the excavations of the university of amsterdam (1988) and the national museum of antiquities leiden (1991-1993) in syriaIstanbul • Published In 1996 • Pages: 339-401

By: Duistermaat, Kim.

Abstract
Duistermaat describes the stamp seals (of which there are only a few) and the clay sealings that were found at the Tell. Some of the sealings did not have impressions and may have only been lids for containers. The other sealings had impressions that Duistermaat broke into 27 different design types. On the reverse, the sealings also show impressions of the containers they were attached to (basket, clay, stone, or leather) and of the ropes attached to these containers. Numerous illustrations of some of the sealing designs are provided. The sealings appear to have been saved after they were removed from their containers for administrative purposes, perhaps as a record of what had been received.
