The Predynastic of Egypt

Journal of world prehistory2 (2) • Published In 1988 • Pages: 135-185

By: Hassan, Fekri A..

Abstract
Hassan writes an overview of the Predynastic period for both Lower and Upper Egypt and then provides his model of the emergence and formation of the Egyptian Dynastic state by an examination of power and the rise of political power. Some of the topics Hassan covers are the antecedents of Predynastic cultures, the influences on the cultures from outside the Nile valley, the effects of climate change especially as seen in the changes in the Nile flood levels, the rise of food production, the role of trade and inter-community contacts, craft specialization, the emergence of chiefs, and urbanization. As Hassan writes of both Upper and Lower Egypt only the Nagada culture was indexed for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) subjects. The reader is reminded the Nagada culture expanded northward as the time period progressed.
