The Early Dynastic Egypt tradition extends from 5300 to 4575 BP, from the time of the late Predynastic kings through the third dynasty. The territory centers in Egypt with colonies in what is now Gaza, Israel, and the West Bank. The people were sedentary agriculturalists and there were only a few cities. The emerging state was based on a political-religious hierarchy with the king thought of as a god by the end of the time period. Writing progresses from labels on funerary items to short texts.
