The Proto-Athapaskans were mobile hunters and gatherers living in the central portions of the contemporary Canadian provinces of Yukon and British Columbia and adjacent areas of central Alaska--the areas inhabited historically by Northern Athapaskans. The Proto-Athapaskan tradition is from 2000-150 BP (1-1850 AD). Settlement pattern is of dispersed hunting camps and fishing sites. Winter sites include evidence of semisubterranean houses.
