The Proto-historic and historic Athapaskan occupation of British Columbia: the archaeological evidence

western Canadian journal of anthropology5 (3-4) • Published In 1975 • Pages: 4-20

By: Wilmeth, Roscoe.

Abstract
Wilmeth briefly describes some Athapaskan archaeological sites with European trade goods. He then compares some of the archaeological materials to determine how similar these sites are. Some of the similarities are found in the projectile points, end scrapers, the intensive use of retouched flakes, birch bark rolls, and perhaps the bone beamers. Wilmeth then compares the historic and proto-historic sites with prehistoric sites in the Plateau and determines that there is no continuity and no relationship between them. This could be because there was no Athapaskan presence on the Fraser Plateau prior to A.D. 1300. Wilmeth very briefly looks at known Athapaskan sites in other areas and finds there is good evidence for cultural connection with sites north of the Plateau, particularly in the northern Yukon.
