Book
The formative cultures of the Carolina Piedmont
American Philosophical Society • 54 (5) • Published In 1964 • Pages: 130
By: Coe, Joffre Lanning.
AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Coe examined a number of sites in the North Carolina Piedmont in order 'to identify and define the progression of cultural entities that developed in the Carolina Piedmont from the earliest beginings to the historic period' (page 120). Before this publication the different phases of the Archaic period in the Piedmont were unknown and it was thought of as a single, homogeneous culture with little or no variation in time and space. Coe excavated at four stratified sites: Doerschuk, Gaston, Hardaway, and Lowder's Ferry. Through these excavations Coe identified several periods (based on the projectile point types) that are considered to be Middle Archaic by later researchers: Stanly, Morrow Mountain, Guilford, and Halifax. Most of the artifacts from the Archaic period at these sites are stone due to poor preservation, so little is known of these time periods beyond their stone tools.
