Abstract
'This paper summarizes information derived from four recently excavated sites with Early Woodland components in southwestern Michigan, and evaluates them in the context of previously studied regional Early Woodland sites. The new data serve to increase our understanding of Early Woodland occupations in the upper Great Lakes region between approximately 600 B.C. and A.D. 1.' (page 47). 'Based on the typology and radiocarbon dating of the Eidson ceramics, it now appears that Marion Thick ceramics may have persisted in Michigan much later than has been previously believed. At least at out sites in the St. Joseph Valley such vessels seem to have been in use through Morton phase time in Illinois and into the first centruy B.C., possible even later.… [S]trong typological continuity in projectile points from Late Archaic to Middle Woodland is well documented by the US-31 project data. It appears that Kramer points may have been a minor type throughout the Early Woodland. In addition, ceramics may have remained in rather limited use.' (page 76-77).
