Neutron activation analysis of ceramics from Mandeville and Swift Creek

Abstract
Smith describes her neutron activation analysis of ceramic samples from Gerogia and Florida. The lab work done in 1975 was meant to show the reliability of neutron activation when samples were carefully screened but the results were inconclusive. More recently Smith returned to the data to do additional statistical analyses to see if trade accounted for the distribution of some of the ceramics. The results of the statistical analyses 'offer limited support to a hypothesis of trade as one of the cultural processes involved in the distribution of Swift Creek ceramics.' (page127). Smith believes that the results were limited partly due to the homogeneity of Coastal Plains soils in Georgia. The sites where she obtained her samples are briefly described along with the lab procedures from 1975.
