Abstract
Hays used existing collections from sites in the upper Scioto River valley in Ohio to determine how the 'Adena mortuary program was practiced in a region … in central Ohio.' (page iv). He describes and analyzes nine mound sites and two open sites (villages). The sites were mostly around Alum Lake or Columbus, Ohio. He determined the mortuary rituals in the Alum Lake area were 'a relatively homogenious and stable program of secondary cremation burial,' while those around Columbus 'were highly variable in their treatment and placement of the bodies and artifacts.' (page iv). To Hays, this suggests the Columbus groups and ritual leaders had more contact with outside peoples and ideas in comparison with the Alum Lake groups. He also believes the differences between Adena mortuary ritual practices can be as great in a single valley as the variablity that can be found throughout the Adena area.
