Dancey and Pacheco explore Olaf Prufer's hypothesis that 'Ohio Hopewell communities lived in dispersed households .. that were clustered around … areas containing burial mounds and ceremonial earthworks.' (page 30.). Using data from the 1980s that covered more than 90 sites, they discuss the settlement pattern for the Ohio Hopewell. They 'sketch what we think a Middle Woodland cultural landscape would have looked like and identify how the following chapters in this book contribute to this understanding. [And] …we describe the current state of affairs in Middle Woodland settlement archaeology in Ohio.' (page 5).
