Abstract
In this paper Kelly discusses the role of Cahokia as a 'gateway' or trading center in interregional exchange, and presents a comprehensive review of Cahokian contacts with its frontier to the north as well as its cultural cognates to the south. This 'gateway' concept, in the late twentieth century, has been applied to several other archaeological situations, including Mesoamerica and medieval Europe.
