In this study Lewis summarizes the understanding of Mississippian cultural developments in the Ohio-Mississippi rivers confluence region with emphasis on the early Mississippi period and on connections with the American Bottom and the Lower Ohio Valley (p. 274). A brief summary of the Late Woodland Period preceding the Mississippian is presented as background for this study, followed by an evaluation of the various sites constituting the early Mississippian period in this region.
