AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Jennings describes his excavations and findings at Danger, Juke Box, and Raven Caves with Danger Cave, having the deepest and best preserved deposit, comprising the bulk of this document. There were no absolute dates for the remains from Juke Box or Raven Caves. At Danger Cave cultural stratum DII dates from circa 10,000 BP-9,000 BP (circa 8000 BC-7000 BC). Unfortunately, there were no dates for cultural stratum DIII. Instead there is a date of 3859 BP (1869 BC) for cultural stratum DIV; so DIII would have to be older than that date. Only the data that pertain to cultural strata DII and DIII were marked for OCM (Outline of Cultural Materials) codes. The artifacts from the caves included the more usual stone, shell, and bone tools, but the well preserved deposit also contained artifacts made from wood, grass, hide, cordage, and textiles such as basketry and netting. Also found were food remains such as quids and bones and coprolites that were assumed to be from humans. Jennings' analysis of the projectile points from Danger Cave showed that many of the projectile points were in use for thousands of years and so were not very useful as time indicators. Jennings came up with the term 'Desert Culture' which is now thought of as the Archaic period in the Great Basin.
