Use-wear patterning on expedient tools

preliminary investigations of the archaic in the region of las cruces, new mexico (9) • Published In 1993 • Pages: 130-138

By: Dawson, Peter.

Abstract
Dawson knapped a series of expedient flakes and then used the flakes on organic and inorganic materials of varying hardnesses. The experimental tools were then microscopically examined to detect use-wear. No archaeological tools were examined. 'This study was undertaken to infer the functions of ... lithic implements, recovered from the Spring Canyon and North Mesa localities....Such [experimental tools] then could be used as a standard for comparison in the identification of use-wear patterning occurring in the archaeological records of the Todsen and North Mesa sites.'
