Abstract
Wills examined the earlier data from excavations at the SU site, the type site for the Pine Lawn phase, in conjunction with his more recent excavations at that site. Will shows that the earlier ceramic seriation by the Field Museum is probably inaccurate and should not be used to date sites. Wills describes and analyzes data from the pit houses, their associated artifacts and pits, and the burials; and compares these data to other sites to reassess the settlement pattern, the duration of occupation, the date of occupation, and when the Pine Lawn phase probably began. Wills feels the Pine Lawn phase should date to AD 450-AD 550 verses AD 200-AD 550. He examined the C14 dates and compares them to the dendrochronological dates. C14 dates on wood overestimate the age by 200 years most of the time as they are dating the age of the wood or woody plant and not when the wood was cut for use.
