AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Lukachukai and Salina Springs were both discovered during construction operations and were investigated as emergency excavations. Lukachukai is a late Archaic/Basketmaker II site containing pit structures, a bell-shaped pit, hearths, chipped stone tools, shell, and maize among other plant remains. Salina Springs also has a late Archaic/Basketmaker II occupation with pit houses, midden, hearths, chipped stone, bone, and maize. No manos or metates were found, but neither site was fully excavated. Samples of the maize were directly dated to 3495-3100 BP, one of the earliest dates for maize in this area.
